Have you noticed that when you’re under stress, you tend to get sick, catch a cold or even present with a seemingly new disease?
The understanding of this according to Chinese Medicine is that the illness or disease doesn’t just express itself under that stressful circumstance, but rather it’s an accumulation over that’s expressed when the yin and fluids are depleted from managing stress. And then the disease process begins to unfold.
Before this moment, the disease is said to be held by the humors of the body — including Jing (essence), blood and Yin in general.
Understanding the Concept of Latency
When the humors — Jing, blood, Qi — become stagnant it can cause problems long term. Medications for example create this stagnation by inducing Cold in the body.
As we become depleted in the humors during the aging process, this allows the latent factors that have been suppressed come out.
Living a fast paced life accelerates aging as well as the depletion of the body’s fluids and can therefore allow the latent factors to manifest.
In episode 51, we discussed how you should never do health maintenance, because there’s always a need for health improvement.
We all hold latent factors in our bodies and during the course of acupuncture treatments, these latent factors can be cleared, which can sometimes create a healing process as the body goes through a process of clearing.
This is not a disease crisis but rather a healing crisis when a person is going through a cleansing of a latent factor — this can happen physically with pain or extreme symptoms as well as emotionally where feelings like anger and fear are more prominent as they attempt to clear.
Each emotion will express itself depending on where the latent factors are held. For example if there’s something held in the Kidneys, you may experience more fear or if the latency is in the Lungs you can experience sadness emotionally or pneumonia physically.
The most important thing is to develop greater body awareness to prevent disease or at least be aware and equip yourself to deal with the process.
3 Ways to Purify Latent Factors for Disease Prevention
In episode 51, Dr. Setareh shared her personal experience in healing a benign pituitary tumor using in part the Microcosmic and Macrocosmic Orbit Meditations.
The Microcosmic and Macrocosmic Orbit Meditations help to circulate energy throughout your body through the primary source channels of Yin and Yang, known as the Du and Ren Meridians, which are also the Fire and Water pathways of the body. In this way, these meditations also connect the Fire and Water energies, cultivating Heart-Kidney communication, which helps you realize and live out your life purpose. Salvador also discussed Walking Qigong as a method of purification in episode 51. This practice stimulates the Lungs, Liver and Kidney channels and therefore to purify the blood and fluids, so it’s very useful to clear the lymphatic system.
Also important is to relax the ancestral sinews. Diaphragm tightness means you cannot clear. Psoas muscles and abdominal rectus will be tight if the Liver is stagnant. Sternocleidomastoid (SCM) and erector spinae along the spine also need to be relaxed — Fire path has to be relaxed for circulation to move along the Water path.
Yin Yoga practice is an effective way to release these ancestral sinews and calm your nervous system. Primarily release lower back and psoas muscles which become tight to help us run but stay inappropriately tight under chronic stress, which causes signals to be sent to the brain to keep us in fight or flight.
The hips are a huge area where we hold latency and Yin Yoga is a powerful way to release these areas.
It’s effective to use the Water Path breathing while doing these Yin Yoga postures.
The way you would do this is to breathe in down your spine, gathering the energy down into your pelvis, and as you exhale release the energy up the front of your body.
So 3 practices you can do to purify latency and prevent disease from manifesting in your body is:
